NCCWSL- National Conference for College Women Student Leaders

AAUW SV SelectS Student Leaders to Attend NCCWSL

The Silicon Valley branch of the American Association of University Women grants fellowships for two Foothill College students to attend the AAUW-sponsored National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL), to be held May 30-June 1, 2024, at the University of Maryland in College Park, just outside of Washington DC. This is the fourth year the branch has sent young women student leaders to the conference. Each year, the conference brings together hundreds of college women from around the country for three days of leadership training, inspiration, and networking. This year’s event will include sessions on career development, mentorship, financial literacy, and racial-justice activism. Participants will have an opportunity to explore post-graduate programs, careers in a variety of disciplines, and other opportunities for their future.

The 2024 awardees are Amit Freikorn, Vice President of Activities at Foothill College, and Nicole Nguyen, Student Trustee on the Foothill Board of Trustees.

Amit Freikorn moved to Sunnyvale, California a year ago from Israel and chose Foothill College because it was too late to try for a four-year school.
She has enjoyed Foothill’s small classes, which made it easier for her to adjust to American campus life.

Nicole Nguyen’s family came to California from Viet Nam, and she has grown up in San Jose. She admits to having been a poor student in high school, so she chose a community college to improve her skills.

Both women hope to transfer to one of the UC campuses on completing their time at Foothill College. Freikorn plans to major in economics with
an eye toward a legal career, while Nguyen plans to follow her interest in minority rights and diversity issues with a major in sociology.

The AAUW fellowships include room and board as well as attendance at all conference meetings. The Community College district is providing airfare for
the two awardees.

Congratulations to our fellowship recipients. Plan to hear about their experience at our Fall Kick-off event.
